ABSTRACT
Medicine is undergoing an intense degree of change brought about by Government pressure to constrain the costs of health care, technological advances, an increasingly elderly population with the consequent rise of chronic disease and the information revolution. In addition, medicine is the only one of the traditional ‘learned professions’ which is also scientific and technologically based. All this means that medicine occupies a singular and interesting position amongst the professions.
