ABSTRACT
The word sonar is derived from SOund Navigation And Ranging, but in recent times has become applied to most underwater acoustic systems, even though they may not be strictly related to navigation and ranging. The two sonar systems described here are the echo- sounder, a device for measuring the depth of water, and the Doppler log, a device for measuring speed.
