If we are concerned wi th understanding the media, we need to get to grips with what we mean by Media Studies and by Media Educat ion. We also need t o make sense of such key concepts as genre, audiences, representation, institutions and ideology. We want to provide help in devising workable approach es to teaching about the media and suggest some practical ideas for the classroom. In this chapter, we therefore look at some of the everyday problems of teaching about the media, like:
