THE MALAWIAN ECONOMY

Malawi is a small landlocked country in Central Africa, with a population estimated at 9.1 million growing at an annual rate of 3.6 per cent. It is one of the poorest countries in the world (estimated GNP per capita in 1991 was US$230: World Bank 1993b) and also one of the most densely populated countries in Africa (89 inhabitants per square kilometre of land surface or 170 inhabitants per square kilometre of arable land).
