ABSTRACT

It was no easy assignment to elicit information from teachers alleged to be incompetent. Most had been emotionally bruised by the events in which they found themselves enmeshed and some said it was traumatic even to recall them. Many of those who replied said they were deeply stressed. Just as the head teachers, described in Chapter 3, reported considerable strains on themselves and their family, so too the 70 teachers in this study said that they had found the experience devastating.
