ABSTRACT

Of all the images that I have shown in this latter group, perhaps the most telling are the cover pages of the children’s magazines shown in chapter 2 (see figures 2.9 and 2.10). On the Japanese cover, drawings, photographs and multiple texts of many colours are scattered and superimposed in frenzied and patchy arrays across the entire surface resulting in a truly

fragmented, decentralized and incomplete collage. On the other hand, the Western cover shows an altogether simpler and more ordered composition of elements about a dominant centre.
