Mathematics: aims and practices
The view that mathematics is an essential component of statutory schooling is one that most people would share. It can be said that with or without the National Curriculum mathematics has held a central place in the primary curriculum since the introduction of statutory education in 1870. Most would accept the high status accorded to mathematics in children’s education and most would accept that it should be both useful and intellectually challenging. However, not all would agree on the kinds of activities to be offered to children that would meet these aims and there is probably even less agreement on how they should be achieved.
