ABSTRACT

I really believe deep down that rock ’n’ roll is an art, man, and I really just don’t see totally sellin’ out everything for a buck.

—Chris Robinson, Black Crowes

A major theme of this album is staying loyal to the art you believe in and never compromising-you know of the confrontation in the music world of “art versus commercialism.” Well, all musicians try to blaze their own path with their own art, but a choice has to be made, as in “A Matador’s Poem” [by Charles Bukowski] which says, “Are you going to love your life or are you going to face death every day in the bull ring?” In the end, the matador chooses death in the bull ring. It’s a very profound poem.
