ABSTRACT

I want to dedicate this special moment to all the songs I’ve loved: to the ballads that gently submerged me in the waters of deep reflection, and to the rockers that made my blood rush like a warrior’s as they blasted through the windows of my car. Here’s to the sad songs, so accurate in reading the cracks etched into my heart. Here’s to the angry ones, whose sonic violence has given me a language of rage and liberation. Here’s to the songs I’ve shared with others, raising my voice and hands in family feeling as friends bellowed along off-key. And here’s to the ones I would never share, whose chart-topping popularity cannot convince me that they speak for anyone but me.
