ABSTRACT

In speaking to you to-night I am, of course, breaking one of the golden rules which should be observed by all honorary secretaries, who are always enjoined to comply with the first part of that north-country maxim which begins ‘see all, hear all, say nowt’; but in extenuation, I can plead that I am performing a task quite proper to a Secretary: namely that of expressing, however imperfectly, the theories of a number of colleagues. For I must emphasise that what I have to say is the result of teamwork, and therefore no single individual, least of all myself, can claim all the credit, or suffer all the criticism, which is evoked by the ideas I shall endeavour to explain. I am, however, responsible for any views which I specifically state to be personal to myself.
