STAFF DEVELOPMENT IN SUPPORT OF EFFECTIVE STUDENT LEARNING IN SOUTH AFRICAN DISTANCE EDUCATION

Since the historical election of April 1994, everyone involved in South African education has to cope with the huge backlogs, discrepancies and inequalities inherited from the past, the challenges of global change and technology, and the need to be relevant to the demands of an emergent democratic society. There are enormous resource constraints and in the words of one of South Africa’s ViceChancellors: ‘The plane has to be serviced in flight.’
