ABSTRACT
It is clear how Mary Somerville was constructed as having no ‘spark’: her early enthusiasm and expertise in mathematics were deemed to be incompatible with womanhood. In this chapter I try to uncover how girls and boys are currently being constructed as mathematicians or as ‘of the earth’ and to question whose interests this (unwanted) dualism serves.
