ABSTRACT
The process of operating and maintaining roads and streets is a complex one. Ultimately one aims to provide the residents in an area, a city or a country with a road/street network of good status and that is safe to use, and is passable. At the same time the task of operating and maintaining a road/street network has a low status so there has been a relatively low level of interest amongst universities to conduct research and education on operation and maintenance of roads and streets.
To consider the process of operating and maintaining roads and streets involves understanding both the process as a whole and its individual parts. One must also understand the role of operation and maintenance in the life cycle process of a network or a structure. This paper points out that this understanding is an essential element when performing the task and gives examples of the current research and education on the operation and maintenance of roads and streets in Sweden.
