ABSTRACT

As a relatively new specialty, construction management education in China has received much attention recently. This has happened coinciding with China’s rapid economic redevelopment and the increasing demand in infrastructure and communication. The last two decades saw three main stages of development trend in construction management education each with distinctive characteristics. There are now established courses offered in over 20 universities. A governing body for curriculum development was established and it has introduced some major strategic plans to improve the standard of construction management education. However there are still many problems including the lack of input, supervision and accreditation of course development from the construction industry, the imbalance of curriculum structure and student’s excessive workload. The future development will focus on the standardisation of course assessment and approval procedures, the optimisation of course structure and the improvement of teaching materials and methods. Successful experiences of international construction management courses, such as those offered in the UK, USA and Australia would be borrowed from and referred to so that future courses will have more international perspective and graduates will benefit from exposure in internationally recognised theories and practices.
