ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the orientations to work of the students that we interviewed in our three participating universities. In our interviews, we were particularly concerned to determine how far our respondents were aware of the ways large-scale organizations were restructuring, and the implications this would have for their own employment prospects. Would they continue to subscribe to traditional notions of career progression, or were they developing conceptions of the labour market that would encourage them to develop more innovative and flexible employment strategies? In our opinion, either was possible in view of the impact of broader ideological and institutional changes on the one hand, and factors shaping personal experience and hence their expectations, on the other.
