ABSTRACT

Regional and local newspapers are finished! It’s just a matter of time. Look at the year-on-year sales, advertising and the medium itself. They are old fashioned, fuddy-duddy and will never wake up to the future. A stuffy image has dogged the regional press for many years but the truth is as far away from those comments as it could be. Nine out of ten adults continue to read a local or regional newspaper each week with 1,400 newspaper titles circulating or distributing across the country as part of a ES billion industry employing 35,000 people (TGI, 1996 and Newspaper Society, 1996a).
