ABSTRACT

We teach and learn in a time when human agency and authentic voice, diversity and multicultural education are receiving attention like no other time in the history of the United States and we can include the world. This attention is brought on by an increase in the population of people of color, and the development of a climate that encourages, although reluctantly, increased respect for group empowerment. Another factor stimulating the change is the acceptance of the importance of social cultural factors in learning and the movement toward challenging traditional assumptions and envisioning multiple possibilities for change.
