ABSTRACT

Bernie was possibly the least ‘prisonised’ inhabitant of Grendon; his whole demeanour and the manner of his talk unfailingly hinted that it was really an unfortunate error on the part of the judiciary ever to have put him in prison at all. Short, plump and middle-aged, his entirely bald head made him look much older than he actually was. He claimed to be ‘just turned forty’, but on the other hand, his life’s experiences had been so extensive and varied that you couldn’t help wondering how, by that age, he had managed to include them all.
