ABSTRACT

Genista McIntosh’s discussion offers an appropriate introduction to this section. McIntosh is an immensely powerful voice in British theatre and yet because she does not work in the areas which get most high-profile attention in the mediaacting and directing-her name is not well known to the general public even though she has such a major part to play at the Royal National Theatre, as formerly at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in determining what plays the public will see, who plays which roles and how the public will be targeted in terms of marketing. In a sense her professional location puts her on the margins in terms of the dominant public perception.
