ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter, I revisit some of the themes introduced and discussed throughout this volume: themes such as formalism, aesthetic relevance, scientific knowledge, functional descriptions, postmodern appreciation, as well as others. I do so in order to suggest an overall framework for the aesthetic appreciation of both our natural and human environments. I approach the construction of this framework by way of the landscape descriptions we find in literature, asking about the relevance of such descriptions to the aesthetic appreciation of the landscapes so described. I focus on one particular example: the landscape descriptions of contemporary mystery writer Tony Hillerman.
