ABSTRACT

In 1871 George Grote was buried in Westminster Abbey-a rare mark of distinction. Among the pallbearers were John Stuart Mill and Benjamin Jowett. These three lovers of Plato are the focus of the present essay.1 Let me introduce them one by one:

John Stuart Mill (1806-73): the most influential British philosopher of the nineteenth century; political reformist; defender of liberty and of women’s rights; author of a humane version of Utilitarianism.
