ABSTRACT
Most of this book has addressed the interaction between fictional worlds and their contexts as an essential part of the reading of novels. Mediation between text and context has been located in the participant activities of writing and reading, but the conventional autonomy of fictional worlds leads to a situation in which only the signatures and prefaces of these novels are read as having actualworld referents.
