ABSTRACT

For this chapter I invited a small group of artists and educators to discuss their different experiences in formal, gallery and community arts education and artists’ residencies, because as I shall outline below, these sectors challenge a number of conventions about the purpose of young people’s creative production. As a debate, the discussion highlights differences in approach and expectation between these cultural sectors and schools, throwing up points of controversy; but it also identifies areas of shared practice. The conversational format reflects the dialogic and occasionally argumentative nature of the processes of making and evaluation, of making judgements and expressing opinions, and raises questions about these processes as they occur in different contexts. I have edited the participants’ contributions and included some of their retrospective comments on the transcripts.
