ABSTRACT

Multimedia, in common with all microelectronics-driven technology including the microprocessor and personal computer, is in part a by-product of military research and development (R&D). The key components of today’s multimedia, the computer itself, microcircuits, the Internet, two-and threedimensional imaging, simulation and so on, were originally developed under the auspices of the military. Although the list of military-funded developments that have led to multimedia is long, it is productive to our understanding to explore the actual historical circumstances in which these technologies were devised and developed.
