ABSTRACT

It is largely accepted among economists that analysis of the multinational enterprise (MNE) is an extension of the study of large firms (e.g. see Caves, 1982). Thus this analysis properly belongs in the domain of industrial organization, a field that has witnessed considerable development over the past two decades or so, giving rise to what is often termed the ‘new’ industrial organization. The ‘new’ industrial organization is treated comprehensively by Tirole (1988).
