In recent years the pressure has been for higher achievement in the basic skills and the other aims of primary education, such as social and personal development, are less often discussed, although teachers of primary-age children are very conscious of their responsibility for the whole child. Croll and Hastings (1996:8) comment, ‘Studies of teachers’ aims and values concur in showing that teachers virtually all share commitment to, on the one hand, high standards in the basic skills of literacy and numeracy and, on the other hand, to the personal and social well-being of their pupils.’
