ABSTRACT
I The essays collected here represent a preliminary effort to open up a new field of comparative social science research-the systematic study of the activities and influence of professional economists in modern government. This introduction is designed to provide a general background to the individual country studies that follow, and to highlight some of the themes and problems which recur in the subsequent chapters.1
