ABSTRACT
This chapter commences by examining the debate on the link between environmental policy and competitiveness, paying particular attention to the ideology of ecological modernisation which is increasingly permeating EU environmental policy. The following sections trace the evolution of EU environment policy and examine attempts to widen the range of policy instruments to include environment taxes and other economic instruments, before briefly examining the international dimension of environmental policy. The chapter concludes by examining the corporate response to environment issues.
