ABSTRACT
Early models of stress-whether in or outside the workplace-were unable to capture the human complexity of stress responses. In particular, they failed to incorporate cognitive elements that mediate perception of stresses and subsequent responses to them. These earlier models have been summarised by Cox (1981), and will now be briefly described.
