ABSTRACT

This chapter will consider a number of issues relevant to the design of burnout prevention and management, and of the evaluation of its impact. First, the lack of good outcome studies will be discussed, along with a critique of approaches to intervention from the non-HIV/AIDS (and non-health services) arena-the issues raised may well inform future thinking on the conduct of stress interventions at an organisational level in HIV/AIDS and elsewhere. Then, models for stress and burnout management and prevention are discussed, based on what we know so far in HIV/AIDS and other fields of health staff care. The last part of the chapter concerns the range of additional issues to consider when investing in staff support. The overall aim is to be practical and relevant to the known needs of health workers in HIV/AIDS.
