ABSTRACT

If we can be complacent for a moment, the twentieth century has seen a great advance in museums, not just in this country but all over the world. I remember reading how in the previous century at the British Museum there was a man on the gates who was there to turn away anybody who wasn’t respectably dressed. I think we have seen a lot of changes since the time when museums were reserved for the educated elite. We now like to hope that everybody is educated whether they are elite or not.
