ABSTRACT

It is customary in volumes of celebration to focus on those themes in the work of an admired colleague which are regarded not simply as representative of a productive career, but also as providing the starting point for positive new lines of development. In this essay I will focus on what has certainly been a major theme in Geoff Harcourt’s work, but it is a theme with which I happen to disagree. I hope that I can shed some light on the analytical roots of our disagreement, and if I am successful this might prove to be the starting point for future agreement.
