ABSTRACT

One of your jobs as geography coordinator will be the management of the subject resources. It’s a never ending task because items need replacing, curriculum developments occur and new materials are always temptingly appearing. In reality you will probably have a small budget. Part of your success in effectively resourcing geography will therefore depend on how well you prioritise purchases and your ability to obtain items for little or no cost. Your first task is to make a list of all the geography resources you can find in the school. Some may be worn out, stereotyped or out-of-date-get rid of these now, It will save doing it just before your inspection! A few good quality materials are better than many poor ones. This will not be a problem with general stock stored centrally, but you may have more of a problem if in the past teachers have been able to choose and buy materials which have then become part of ‘their’ classroom stock. If this is a serious problem it is a good idea to talk to the headteacher. S/he may be able to help in either disposing of these resources or arranging for them to be stored in a more effective way.
