ABSTRACT

Introduction Children have experienced a great deal of relevant and interesting geography since the introduction of the 1991 Orders. Many primary school teachers have worked hard to implement these requirements and the Dearing revisions. This is a very different situation from that described by HMI in 1989 when they wrote that ‘overall standards of work in geography were very disappointing’ DES (1989). The role of the classteacher has been crucial and remains at the centre of British primary education. Teachers are concerned with the development of the whole child, the provision of secure relationships and the creation of a supportive and effective learning environment.
