ABSTRACT

A major aspect of the SENCO's role is to manage the support systems for meeting SEN. Supporting teaching and learning is fundamental to the development of inclusive education where it becomes part of a whole-school approach to curriculum management and staffing policies rather than a means of meeting the needs of a small number of pupils. You need to be conscious of the position of SENCOs as potential agents for change in the philosophy and practices identified in the Green Paper Excellence for All Children(DfEE, 1997b). Your role is to ensure that the primary school can effectively meet the needs of allchildren, not to think of ‘support’ as something required by a few children in order to ‘maintain’ them in a mainstream school.
