ABSTRACT

An excellent general history of Soviet foreign policy from 1917 to 1991 is Craig Nation (1992). Nogee & Donaldson (1988) offer a solid textbook on postwar Soviet foreign policy which contains a wealth of useful information and analyses. For an alternative perspective try Crockatt (1995) which combines historical interpretation with the application of international relations theory to the study of postwar Soviet (and American) foreign policy. Highly recommended, too, is Gaddis (1997) which situates Soviet foreign policy in its cold war context and reviews recent research and archival findings. For a general history of the cold war I would recommend Ashton (1989), Walker (1993) and LaFeber (1997). For an ‘inside’ view of postwar Soviet foreign policy see Ponomaryov et al. (1973)—an official, governmentendorsed, textbook history. The official mindset of Soviet foreign policy is also exemplified by the works of Popov et al. (1975) and Sanakoyev and Kapchenko (1976). For outsider accounts of the Soviet ideology of foreign policy and international relations see Light (1988) and Jones (1990).
