ABSTRACT

The most studied event of the Khrushchev era is, of course, the Cuban missile crisis. A good place to start on the enormous literature on this topic is Garthoff (1989) and Fursenko and Naftali (1997). On the SinoSoviet split, I have relied on the excellent documentary collections of Gittings (1968), Griffith (1964) and Hudson et al. (1961) and the recent documents and articles published in the bulletin of the Cold War International History Project (see p. 111). Khrushchev’s memoirs (1971, 1974 and 1990) are fascinating, and by far the most revealing of any Soviet leader, particularly in relation to foreign policy.
