Introduction

This chapter will consider the links between the idea of ‘race’ and the development of a number of education policies and debates which occurred in England and Wales between the 1960s and the 1980s. It will focus on:

■ The ways in which a bundle of ‘natural’ material called ‘the body’ is given social meaning. ■ The way in which such social meanings give rise to policy debates and formulations which then

reproduce or rework these social meanings.
