Outdoor recreation and the environment
Identification of recreation resource potential and classification and evaluation of resources for outdoor recreation are necessary, but only initial steps in the process of creating recreation opportunities. The real challenges for environmental management arise from human use of the recreation resource base. In the final analysis, concern is for the quality of the recreation experience and the degree to which that experience contributes to the physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing of participants. The quality of the recreation experience is largely a function of the environment in which it takes place, but there is nothing deterministic or inevitable about the relationship.
