ABSTRACT

In an increasingly complex world, the need to set aside certain areas free of development, where conservation values can be protected, is seen as crucial and of growing importance. A protected area is defined by the IUCN as:

An area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means.
