ABSTRACT

Education has been defined by Warnock (1978) as being largely concerned with the undertaking of preparing our younger generation to face the challenges of the future. This preparation involves at least three elements: preparation for the world of work; preparation for the life of imagination; and preparation for the life of virtue. We want to argue that each of these will have its typical excellence and that each of them can be addressed within the framework of programmes for quality and effectiveness in schooling.
