ABSTRACT
The postmodern world is typically believed to be characterized by different cultural traditions whose values are said to be chronically rival and incommensurable, compounded by a poverty of recognition and mutual understanding. 1 The challenge for our time is to develop new forms of governance and intermediary institutions that create the conditions for cooperative action in a civil society characterized by the valuing of such difference. 2
