ABSTRACT
Female circumcision is a subject which arouses great interest and concern among academics in the biological and social sciences as well as human rights activists, politicians and journalists. Intense emotions underlie this interest and concern and, more often than not, this has detracted from the quality of research and writing in the academic and popular arena.
