ABSTRACT

Whatever one's view of commumsm and whatever judgement one may arrive at about the political and economic project of the Soviet Union, the cultural impact of that experiment has been very significant on a global scale, particularly in the field of cinema. Whilst the political and economic impact of the Russian revolution of 1917 has clearly been of massive significance throughout the twentieth century, the revolution also changed artistic and cultural life in quite dramatic ways. In fact, for most of this same period, the film practices encouraged and developed by the Russian revolution have been regarded as some of film's greatest experiments.
