To help with these other spellings, Table 8.1 gives the traditional (WadeGiles) versions of the names of cities as well as the Pinyin form, while on p.287, Table 8.3 gives older spellings for the names of dynasties. In the latter table, and in the text when each name first appears, traditional spellings are given in parentheses after the Pinyin. The names of some dynasties, though, and a few other names are spelled the same way in both conventions. In many instances, the older spelling is a better guide to pronunciation for Englishspeakers, as for example with the Qing (Ch’ing) dynasty.
