ABSTRACT

What do we mean when we talk of ‘a school’? A school photograph will include the pupils and the teachers, sometimes the non-teaching staff, but where is the governing body? Some of the governors will be members of staff, some will be parents but some of them may have only a tenuous connection with the school. The governors are members of the community as parents, local residents and employers, and the governing body occupies a position on the boundary of the school, partly in the school and partly in the community served by the school. The governing body can act as a bridge between the school and the community, and should be a two-way conduit for communication between them.
