ABSTRACT

This is an infants school with 180 on roll in two parallel classes in each of the three years: Reception, Year 1, Year 2. The present headteacher took up her post in January 1993, having been deputy head there since May 1990. The latter role was imprecisely defined, with no formal job description, and her only clearly defined activity was responsibility for the curriculum. Her predecessor was the last in the LEA to accept local management of schools (LMS) and it was left to the new incumbent to introduce local financial management (LFM) the year after her appointment. She stated that she had inherited a remarkably high figure of unspent funds, about which the staff and the governors knew nothing.
