ABSTRACT

New building project procurement methods were introduced into the UK during the 1970s and 1980s with the express aim of overcoming the problems caused by traditional methods. The single biggest problem has been the division in responsibility for the design and construction of a building. This has been identified as a prime cause of building projects being either delayed or beyond budget. Commercial pressure to build even faster and cheaper has helped to accelerate such change. The new methods now account for about 50% of all building project procurement and contracts.
