ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a number of insights which may be instructive in this regard by using the edited topical life history approach to explore the work of one school principal, Bronwyn, who is beginning to establish a reputation for herself in leading a ‘successful’ NPQTL school. Bronwyn is forty-five years of age and married with two children. She grew up in Perth, at Applecross, but in her youth she spent long periods of time in the country with her grandmother, particularly when her mother was sick. Bronwyn led a very ‘normal’ and active life outside of school. She was very much involved in a variety of sports, particularly netball and athletics, and her memory is very strong of ‘playing sport every day’ and considering this level of activity to be very important at the time. On graduation in 1970, Bronwyn immediately commenced teaching in a WA rural high school.
