ABSTRACT

Greenfield Senior High School, established in 1974, is situated in the Perth metropolitan area, northeast of the city. David Smith was appointed principal of this 850-pupil school in 1992. He was initially attracted to the school because of its location in a challenging environment. David believes in schools having a student-centred focus. David's life has been one of constant change and often adversity, but also one of success and achievements, especially in his teaching endeavours. David was expelled at age eleven for flicking a note in class on which he had written a vulgar remark he did not even understand. David admits to not making much of the opportunities presented to him at school and he certainly felt that he was not good enough for university. David enjoyed his early teaching experiences and was quite surprised to find that his students liked him, were happy and responded to his teaching.
